One Room Challenge Fall 2016 {reveal}

It’s here – the biggest day of the fall – the One Room Challenge Reveal Day! Who needs Christmas when we have this? I am so excited to show you all the hard work we put into this space. I’m also dying to see the other nineteen invited designers’ rooms as well as those of all the linked participants! There are going to be some amazing reveals!

Just in case you’re new here – Welcome to Suburban B’s – we’re Erin and Tricia and we’re all about turning our basic builder spec homes into spaces we love while raising three kids in the ‘burbs. This is our sixth One Room Challenge Reveal and we are beyond thrilled that Linda of Calling Us Home asked us to be an invited designer!

To refresh your memory this ORC was all about transforming my family room, kitchen and breakfast nook. It was a big chunk to bite off for a six week transformation but I hope you are going to love how everything turned out just as much as we do! Here’s my take on the modern Parisian apartment – in the suburbs of course.

For all the details and sources for the One Room Challenge reveal please visit this post

But before really diving into all the divine photos by the very talented Kelli Kroneberger let’s take a look back at where things started. It was more than time to get rid of the 18 year old sofa that was on its third slipcover and to give the family room an overall style boost.

One Room Challenge Fall 2016 || Suburban Bi's 1134-1

The breakfast nook’s feel was much darker than I liked and everything about the space was temporary. Granted that temporary status was years in the making.

Week One Fall 2016 One Room Challenge || The Suburban B's 1209

The kitchen was fine but it definitely needed a refresh.

Week One Fall 2016 One Room Challenge || The Suburban B's 1177

And now let’s get this party started and see how we transformed these three spaces.

 All the beauty in this transformation required a whole lot of work, not a lot of sleep, eating out wayyyy too much, lots of banning of children and dogs from the room and great big huge stockpiles of dirty laundry. It was all worth it because I’m stunned by how in love I am with the outcome of this One Room Challenge. Is this really my house??? See for yourself – sit back and get ready for a lot of photos!

That’s a wrap! I hope you love the outcome of our One Room Challenge as much as Henry and I do. It’s amazing what you can do when you get a push in the right direction. I’m so grateful to Linda for invited us along on this six week journey. I’ll be back next week to give you a breakdown and sourcing for the space.

    So would you be able to tell me what the white on the walls/trim/kitchen cabinetry is, and who manufacturers it? That’s my starting point since ours are all different shades and finishes.

    Thank you!

    • Thanks San! Wish you could have seen it before you left town! The trim is Dover White by Sherman Williams and the walls are Simply White by Benjamin Moore. I’ll have a post with all the sources up next Wednesday! 🙂

    OH, WOW!! Your rooms came out BEEEautifully! All those yummy colors and textures in the living area are amazing! Velvet & leather? YES! And those sofas and the rug and the art… perfection! You really killed it!

  51. Elle G. says:

    You did an amazing job on the ORC! Everything is so perfect. I’d love to know more about the process you used for the millwork on the walls. I’m in the middle of my own remodel and tried to do this in our entryway. Unfortunately, we have not been able to get the walls completely smooth — so imperfections in the wall show even though we had them floated out by a professional and professionally painted. How were you able to get your walls so smooth? Any advice would be much appreciated!

    • Thank you so much Elle! The struggle for smooth walls is real! Actually though our walls are really really textured. I used an eggshell finish paint on the walls and the Metrie interior finishings and that helped to downplay the texture. I was worried about the texture but as I couldn’t get anyone in in time to smooth the walls and then, with an open floor plan, that would have been opening a can of worms, I decided not to worry about it. Caulking the moulding well was all that I needed to do to make the walls look great! Ok, and maybe my caulking really isn’t the best as this was my first major caulking project. I may be a pro now! It took me about two days and three tubes of caulk to get the finished look. Good luck and please send photos – I’m so intrigued! 🙂

      • Elle G. says:

        Thank you so much for your feedback. I really appreciate it. My painter used semi-gloss (even though I asked for egg shell) so maybe that is why the imperfections show so badly. Just curious – what did you use the caulk for? I will send you pictures of the hall once complete along with some of the rooms. We are redoing each room of the house (4500 sq. feet) so it’s been a huge never-ending project. Unfortunately, we’ve had some bad luck with contractors that has set us back. But it’s been a great (albeit painful) learning process. You have done such a magnificent job with each of your ORCs. Every one of them has been outstanding!! You are a very gifted designer. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful home and advice with us – and for answering each person who sends a comment. :). Let me know how to upload pictures and I will send you pictures of the hall and the rooms I’ve completed. Happy Thanksgiving!

        • Hope you had a good Thanksgiving! Yeah, I think the semi-gloss would definitely bring out any imperfections in the wall. 🙁 I caulked all around the edges of the moulding pieces so there would be no gaps between the wall and the moulding. Thank you thank you on all the love for our ORCs! Erin and I have both really loved doing them!
          The best way to get us images would be email – Good luck with the rest of your house – sounds like quite the undertaking!

    I (literally) sharply inhaled when I saw these pictures! I was curious if you wouldn’t mind sharing where you had sourced the natural window treatments in your kitchen dining area? They are just the type I’ve been looking for!

    • Thanks so much Miranda! I purchased them through 3 Day Blind several years ago. They are from the Kathy Ireland collection. I tried to find a link to include but didn’t have any luck for the exact ones. I did notice however that many blind companies seem to carry them. Let me know if I can help with anything else! 🙂

  54. Bethanni says:

    Amazing!! Have been looking for Inspiration for our new home and how to incorporate the green space in our dining/kitchen into the living space, and this is it!! Where did you get the curtains?

    • Awwww thanks so much Bethanni! That fabric was definitely the inspiration for my space! I made the curtains myself and honestly it’s really not bad! The fabric is Williamsburg Brand Portabello Vase in Laurel and you can get it here. I used this tutorial for the lined drapes. Good luck! 🙂

  55. Glorine Mancias says:

    Hi awesome job on the rooms!! Was wondering where the rug is from?

  56. Glo says:

  57. Absolutely Stunning!! I love the green and navy combo and adore how you combined a luxurious velvet sofa with more masculine leather chairs. And the window treatments!! Awesome job.

    Hi Tricia,
    I love your design and space decoration. Are you happy with the Article sofa’s durability and level of comfort? I saw these online but want sure if I should get them for my living room. Any advice?

    • Thanks Azi! Yes, I have been happy with them. Even with the way my kids are treating them they look great. What sold me on ordering the sofas is that they have a 30 return policy & the delivery fee for returns is the same as the originally delivery fee. My only issue with the sofas was they smelled a bit musty when they arrived. They quickly aired out though. Good luck with your decision!
