One Room Challenge Fall 2016 {Week Five}

Welcome everyone and thanks for stopping by! If you’re new here let me introduce myself: I’m Tricia – one half of the duo behind Suburban B’s. Erin and I blog about all things suburban and how we’re transforming our builder spec homes into spaces we love. This is Week Five of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda of Calling It Home. Twenty designers have just six weeks to completely transform a room!

We are now in full on crunch mode. You know like in college when you realize tomorrow’s is that accounting final you’ve been dreading and there’s six more chapters on the exam than you though there were. Yeah, yikes! There’s just one week left before the big Reveal and I know it’s going to be the shortest week ever and I still have one hell of a laundry list of things to do. If you need a recap of what’s already happened you can catch up here:

I still have way too much too do but this week was a crazy awesome one for getting caught up. It feels like that goal of having a finished space to reveal to you next week is actually going to happen. Maybe just maybe as icing on the cake one day soon we’ll also be able to walk through the living room, the dining room, the hallway and laundry room too!

Last week I left off with a peek at my new Karastan Castine Willow Grey rug.  Isn’t it gorgeous?

Here it is from another view –

Week Five of the One Room Challenge Fall 2016 // Suburban B's

I love friends’ reactions when they come over to check progress – they all go crazy over the rug! It’s one thing for a rug to look pretty but it’s another thing entirely if it’s pretty, amazing to lie on and cleans up beautifully. This rug is made with Mohawk’s Smartstrand Silk fibers making it as soft as a baby’s bottom. It also makes the rug easy to clean up which we unfortunately tested out the other day. A few posts back you might recall me saying I was reluctant to put anything out in advance of the reveal with my whole three messy kids and one large dog situation. Turns out my instincts were dead on.

Saturday I was at the top of a ladder when the dog managed to find the one tiny area of the rug that wasn’t completely covered with furniture, etc and threw up. Yep the dog who before now had thrown up twice chose to get sick on the new rug that’s been out for a whole week and a half! Thanks Henry. I of course freaked out. Fortunately my top of the ladder location got me out of clean up duty and that honor went to my hubby. I was terrified we were going to have the nastiest stain but nada, nothing, zilch. He got it all cleaned up with minimal nagging from me. It was kinda of amazing how easily it cleaned up and a total relief. I am definitely impressed although I would’ve been happy to have never tested out the stain resistance of the new rug!

And continuing on…

The major undertaking this week was hanging the Metrie moulding.

Week Five of the One Room Challenge Fall 2016 // Suburban B's

Right now I’m once again happily staring at the trimwork. It is so good. I had visions of room transformations with the Metrie interior finishings but this so exceeds anything I had ever imagined. I’m now working on convincing my husband that we need to install panel moulding into the hallway, the two story entryway, up the stairs, into the upstairs hallway and our bedroom and anywhere else I can! I love it that much.

Can you stand how amazing the moulding looks on the window wall?

Did you notice the crown moulding? The room looks so much more tailored and finished with it plus it’s a perfect match for the existing crown over our cabinets. It is making me so happy!

Oh what’s that you say? I actually have cabinet doors and drawer fronts to go with my beautiful crown moulding? Yes I do! Russell Furniture did the most amazing job repainting the doors and drawers, rehanging everything and adding the new Lew’s hardware from Even more amazing they did it all in a week! A couple of years ago I made the mistake of hanging repositionable chalkboard wallpaper on  the left side of the cabinet above. When I tried to reposition it seconds after putting it up the paint peeled right up with it. I thought I’d be stuck with that chalkboard forever. Now it looks perfect again. Russell Furniture’s crew’s work is impeccable.

Another change up in the kitchen this week – my electrician on his most recent weekly visit hung the Lucent Light Shop Brass and Blown Glass Pendant.

Sarah the owner of Lucent has been a dream to work with and even customized this sputnik pendant so that it’d be a perfect fit for my hallway.

What’s not yet ready for prime time in the kitchen is the island. Monday morning my electrician Quinton and my carpenter Luke were busy changing the seating situation at it (I’m all about rejigging things if it means less fighting in the house!).

The new configuration of the island is just what I wanted but now I somehow have to find time to stain the part of the floor that was previously hidden under cabinets. I’m having nightmares about this one.

In the family room Quentin hung the Lucent Brass Orb Scones and Pat, my carpenter/handy man tore out the fireplace surround tile. Getting the new tile up is also at the top of the to do list for this week.

Much prettier on that wall than the lack of tile are the new shelves alongside the fireplace. The space looks so much more finished with those in and the crown molding up.

Also on the to do list for this week is to get busy with my sewing machine – I’ve got drapes and pillows yet to sew. I’ve left this not so favorite task until the bitter end. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my cheapo machines doesn’t give up the ghost  before I finish!

Also on the list is setting up this amazing table.

Beyond that this week I’ll be working on styling  the room with lots of pretty accents like these.

Along with the above custom painted utility vase from Jill Rosenwal she’s also sending these plates my way. I’m going to have the prettiest table scape!

It’s going to be a heavy duty week here as I’m sure it’ll be for the other nineteen invited designers. In the meantime check out all that they’ve accomplished in Week Five!
