One Room Challenge Fall 2016 {week two}

Welcome everyone and thanks for stopping by! If you’re new here I’m Tricia – one half of the duo behind Suburban B’s. Erin and I blog about all things suburban and how we’re transforming our builder spec homes into spaces we love.

This is week two of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda of Calling It Home. Twenty designers have just six weeks to completely transform a room. Reveal Day is four short weeks away and there is a lot to get done before then!

Week Two did not conforming to my grand plan. And just to remind you – here’s the grand plan:

Not only am I revamping the family room but I’m also taking on the kitchen & the breakfast nook to keep things really exciting!

If you missed Week One where I laid out my plan for the spaces you can check it all out here.

This is how this week went: Thursday fell apart between a mix of appointments and four hours of middle school parent/teacher conferences (think of a speed dating format in a gym with lots of waiting around in between). Saturday was a day and night away for a wedding without kids. That also all but took care of Sunday too. But tell me who could resist the lure of a weekend away from the kids even in the midst of a huge project?

Then there was Monday. Monday’s distractions were not fun. My car decided to give up the ghost just as I was hitting the highway. That meant waiting around forever for a tow truck, hanging out at the garage, figuring out the rental situation and finally getting back to the house many hours later. I walked in the door just in time to drive kids to activities. Then I had my son remind me at 5:45 that he had an orchestra concert that night and that he needed his pants hemmed in 45 minutes. Oops.

Tuesday didn’t go much better than Monday but there was a bright side to the day. I got to pick up my beautiful new Ames sling chairs from Lazzaro Leathers! They’re just as buttery soft and supple as they look online. Join me as I oh and ah over them for about the hundredth time today.

More good news: even with all the fallout I had this week I still have progress to report.

Like Mr. UPS man becoming my best friend & bringing me boxes and boxes of beautiful things. I love you Mr. UPS man.

He brought my gorgeous Minted artwork – I can’t wait to get it up on the walls!

Other exciting events included my handyman taking out the cabinet boxes in the shelving area to the side of the fireplace.

Just to remind you this is what that wall looked like last week.

You may not be able to tell from the photo but the back area of the cabinet space needed paint. I got that done this week and then my favorite wallpaper hanger JK Paperhanging worked his magic. Joe made all the crazy spaces around my fireplace look so much better with this grasscloth.

The centered recessed area above the fireplace is framed up and ready to go. My electrician’ll be wiring up these pretty little Lucent Light Store brass Peak sconces tomorrow and then it’s just a matter of a little drywall and some paint.

My carpenter’s also comes tomorrow. His primary objective is to get started on my Metrie trimwork which I’m dying to see come together. It’s going to be a game changer. I’ll also be running a new idea for my kitchen island by him. Here’s hoping he gives me the green light on my last minute plan. I’ll let you know!

I’ve got big plans for this next week. A lot needs to happen if I’m going to get back on track after the lost days of this week.

TO DO LIST

  • Get light fixtures installed
  • Get started on trim
  • Dry walling & painting
  • Clear out room
  • Take down drapery hardware
  • Order additional pillows
  • Order drapery hardware
  • Order fireplace surround tile
  • Order lamps
  • Order fabric for window seat cushions
  • GO CAR SHOPPING

Did I mention yet that the kids have a four day weekend coming up? I’m sure having three bored kids around the house for four days won’t be any problem at all. Or… there just might be a movie marathon going on in the basement this weekend. All my best parenting skills always put in an appearance during the ORC. Anyone else with me on this?

Good luck to all the One Room Challenge guest participants – I hope you had a great week filled with lots of progress! I’m looking forward to catching up with you tomorrow.

Be sure to check out all the other featured designers. I’m in awe of what they each have planned for their rooms.

  1. After a week like that, I think I’d pop open a bottle of wine and just stare at that beautiful chair. Holy crap, it’s amazing!

  2. Kristine says:

Wow, what a week! I love your plans. I had originally thrown around the idea of a green velvet sofa, and yours is divine. My husband was not a fan, so I’ll just enjoy looking at yours from afar. The cabinet spaces already look amazing with that grasscloth, and that leather chair is gorgeous!! I’m working on my new post for tomorrow, because stuff is getting real with week 2!

    • It is totally getting WAY too real!! Right there with you! Are you having the nightly panic attacks that things aren’t going to arrive in time? I think I probably just won’t sleep the last two weeks.
Thanks on the green couches – I’m hoping my children aren’t going to love them to a disgusting mess before I can even get photos!

Stumbled upon your ORC through others links and have to say I love your plan! I’ve been eyeing that Article sofa in navy (and the buttery soft golden brown leather) for a while but haven’t been able to pull the trigger without seeing it in person or reading many reviews. Can’t wait to see how you like it and how the rest of the room pulls together!

    • Thanks Virginia for popping by! I love the look of that buttery soft one too! I originally had planned to have a couple couches custom made with a company with a very quick turnaround. My problem was finding the velvet. Who knew it’s impossible to find a kelly green velvet?
What sold me on the Article sofas is the $49 delivery fee and the 30 day option to return. And the return delivery fee is only $49. It’s nice knowing I have an out if it turns out they aren’t a good fit. So far my experience has been great with Article. They should be here next week. I can’t wait!!

  5. Megan Pflug says:

OMG. this is looking amazing! That green sofa is so so good! can’t wait to see it all come together!

    • Thanks Megan! I’m terrified that something’s going to happen and they aren’t going to show up and I’m going to be missing the central part of my room. You know along the lines of the nightmare where you end up at school with no clothes on but instead it’s the naked ORC!

  6. Jillian says:

Hello! I just found your blog and love it! Very funny and well written. I am half of a home blogger duo too so I’m happy to see other partners in crime. I love the grasscloth behind the shelves, I was thinking about that in my daughter’s room and now I’m sold. Thanks!

    • Yay for blogging duos! Thanks Jillian! I’ve thought about adding it to those spaces for years and I’m so glad I finally took the plunge. Hope you go with it for your daughter’s room!

  7. For having the crazy week that you did you still got so much done! I LOVE that chair and can’t wait to see what you do with your Metrie trim!!

  8. Ariel says:

I know what you mean with the UPS guy! Mine actually asked me if I was wearing the same housecoat as the day before. Uhm yes? hahaha
Regardless, this is going to look great!!!!

  9. Oh, this is gonna be amazing! Can’t wait to come back next week and see your progress!

  10. Oh Em Gee. Well despite all the “real life” happening behind the scenes you are making great progress! The chairs!! The sconces! The grasscloth! The art!! So exciting!!!

  11. Sorry about the bad week. I’m drinking for you this evening. But it looks like you’re well on your way!! My husband would LOVE that chair in his office. One room at a time, I tell myself…

  12. OMG – We don’t know how you were able to rally after the week that you had…but you got so much done. We love your design and can’t wait to see it all come together!

  13. sherry hart says:

Your life sounds like mine…in-between work and trying to do the ORC life is hectic! I did not even make the deadline to order some great stuff so on top of telling my husband that this was gonna be great cause I won’t have to spend any money….that is now a lie:) Oh well….looking forward to seeing the reveal in a few short weeks!

  14. So many beautiful elements, I love the sling chairs!

  15. I agree with everyone, for a crazy week you still got a ton done. Great job. That is my favorite chair!

  16. Oh goodness, I’m so sorry to hear about your week but like you said, things are looking up! I had my eye on those leather chairs – they’re gorgeous so I’m so glad you’re using them. Good luck this week and with the car shopping too!

    • Thanks! I regained my sanity and now that the car is working well enough I’m going to treat myself to car shopping on Nov 10th! 😉 And I love the chairs but I also love what you’ve got picked for your room!

  17. Megan says:

I know I’m late to the party, but this is such a stunning room. I have millwork in my living room, and have not been able to find the right shade of gray for it, but now that I see your living room, I want to paint mine white as well. Which white did you go with? It’s so crisp and clean.
