One Room Challenge Tween Queen Bedroom and Bath {Week 2}

You know that saying, “the days are long but the years are short”- I feel like right now the days are short and the weeks are even shorter!! Week 2 of the One Room Challenge is here already, which means its time for me to give y’all an update on my room(s). If you missed my Week 1 post you can check it out here. For this round of the ORC I am making over my 9 year old daughter’s bedroom and bathroom.

Let’s talk about some of the furniture choices I made for her bedroom. I really wanted this room to transition with her as she starts to enter these oh so awkward stages of life. Even though she is only 9 I really want the furniture pieces to work when she’s 9, 13, or 16. First up was getting a bed that would fit a growing child. For this I decided to go with a queen sized bed. And this upholstered bed from All Modern (in the linen smoky quartz color) is the prettiest of lilac colors. The bed arrived this week and I absolutely love the color of it. Yes, I just said love about the color purple- its that pretty of a color!!!

With a larger bed in the room there came the issue of clothes storage. Previously there was a vintage campaign dresser in this room that was on it’s last leg, so I was ready to find a new clothing solution in her room. Her closet isn’t huge and there is just one shelf that runs the length with a hanging rod. The space could be used so much better if we utilized a closet organization system. This unit from ATG stores is on its way and I think it will be a functional and aesthetically pleasant solution to the wasted closet space.

Next to each side of her bed I’m going to have one of these three drawer chests from All Modern. The girl is on the verge of a hoarder, and this way she can keep every rock and leaf that she’s ever picked up behind a closed drawer.

One more piece that I’ve got my fingers crossed will fit in her room is this leaning desk also from All Modern. My daughter spends a ton of time either writing stories, doing homework, or putting on play makeup at the current desk in her room. I couldn’t take away her “work space” so this leaning desk is a space saving solution to the desk area.

And the final piece for her room that will be the fun factor needed in a kids room is this hanging rattan chair! Truth be told, I’m terrified that I’ll hang it wrong and she’ll sit in the swing and rip out the ceiling. So maybe I’ll have someone handier than I hang it and make sure its secured properly. If any of you have hung one of these swings before and have tips I’m all ears.

So far I haven’t made much actual progress on her bedroom. All the furniture pieces and accessories are rolling in each day. I need to get her current bedroom furniture either sold or at the very least moved out of her room. But as each piece gets unwrapped I’m getting more and more excited about seeing how everything will come together.

Now let’s talk about the bathroom. This rather small bath will be getting a total gutted update (minus the vanity cabinet which got painted). The demo on all the tile happened this week and here’s the current state:

And it’s hard to see in the first picture but the vanity cabinet got painted by my very favorite cabinet painting company, Summit Cabinet Coatings. I chose Elephant’s Breath from Farrow and Ball for the color and it’s just a really pretty gray. I also updated the cabinet hardware to a brushed gold using this knob and these pulls from Schoolhouse Electric. Tile is going to start going in at the end of this week and I think the bathroom should come together in the 6 week timeline!!

Next week come back to here more about the art and soft goods I’m incorporating in this bedroom. I found an artist that I just LOVE (Hapi Art and Pattern) and I’m using her work in pillows and large scale framed prints in this room. I love the range of colors Kristi uses in her art and can’t wait to see all of her beautiful patterns in this room. And make sure you check out what the other designers were up to this week with their One Room Challenge!

  2. I just love hanging swings in spaces! This room is going to come out fantastic! I redid my daughter’s shared bedroom a couple of years ago for the ORC and it was a lot of fun. It motivated me to redid my master bedroom last fall. Good luck and can’t wait to see final reveal!
