One Room Challenge Tween Queen Bedroom & Bath {THE REVEAL!!}

Deep breath, deep breath…here we go! Six weeks ago 20 designers and over 200 guest participants took the plunge into the Spring 2017 One Room Challenge. The challenge being- redesign a room in 6 weeks. No problem you say? Well, it’s never without drama and setbacks but I think in the end each person who joins the challenge is thrilled to cross off one room in their house as being done. And all of these beautiful rooms wouldn’t be possible without the organization and support of Linda at Calling It Home. Seriously Linda- where would we all be if you hadn’t started this little challenge of yours??? With a lot of half-finished rooms is where we would be.

Ok, here’s the quick background on the rooms I did this round. My daughter turns 9 and decides that she hates pink and wants it out of her bedroom. At the same time she tells me that purple is her new favorite color and I need to incorporate that color into her new room. I cringe because purple is the last color I want to design around but figure it’s better than my daughter asking for a Power Ranger themed room. We decide on a modern boho look for her room and start pulling together all the pieces via the magical internet. This mood board emerges:

Also feeling the pressure to produce more than one room makeover (because ahem, did you see Tricia make over three rooms last fall?!?!)- I decide to also revamp my daughter’s bathroom. It was pretty ugly to begin with and I knew that the majority of the work for her bathroom would fall onto the back of a tile guy so really it wasn’t adding much to my plate to have the bathroom done as well. I wanted the bathroom to jive with the modern boho bedroom so I picked out a jungle-esque wallpaper and paired it with white subway tile, black penny tile, and lots of gold. Sort of like this:

And then 6 weeks passed and we went from her bedroom and bathroom looking like this:

TO THIS:

Both my daughter and I love her new spaces. In fact, I’m a bit jealous of her bedroom and bathroom as they both are nicer than my own. I sneak up to her room quite often just to lay on her new bed because it is so comfortable! And believe me, I’ll be taking a lot of showers in her bathroom!! Let’s get to it and see all the pictures!! All photos by the lovely Kelli Kroneberger.

And that message board brought a smile to my face when my daughter put the saying “Be an awesome person” on it. Yep, she’s pretty awesome herself and I’m happy that I got to make such a special space for her.

And now it’s time for the bathroom. This room is hard to get a full shot of because it’s small! But man I’m in love with this small space.

The One Room Challenge would not have been possible without all the AMAZING companies who joined as sponsors. These are companies who value home bloggers and have been so great to work with. I will be back early next week with a post on all the sources for these two rooms and I hope you will think of these companies the next time you are shopping.

And all on a 6 week timeline!!!  So today go check out the other invited designers and tomorrow make sure you don’t miss the guest participants!!

  2. Leslie says:

Woo hoo! Congrats! Wow I love the pillows and the two poofs at the wnd of the bed and the colour scheme!!!!

    • Erin says:

Thank you Leslie! This room was a venture for me with the color scheme but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

  3. oh my gosh, erin, you slayed it! i LOOOOOVE the bedroom so much and i would like the bathroom for myself! so glam and modern! you rocked it!

  4. Ariel says:

Wowza! I hadn’t been tracking that you were doing 2 rooms! I love your daughter’s bedroom, especially the large statement pieces on the wall (I have a few from the same artist!) but the bathroom is a knock-out!

    • Erin says:

Yeah, that bathroom is impossible to photograph so I didn’t have a ton of pictures to share along the way with it. I’m obsessed with Hapi art- I may have to steal those pictures from my daughter’s room!

  5. I adore this room and the cactus wallpaper is my favorite. Bravo on surviving the One Room Challenge and a stunning reveal!

    • Erin says:

Thank you for those words Holly! You definitely have been an inspiration in how to use purple and make it look chic!

  6. No words for that bathroom!!! I’d take a carbon copy for myself 😉 The bedroom is just as fabulous! Love the window treatments, art and of course her darling letter board! Beautiful job, Erin!

    • Erin says:

I’m still amazed at how much bigger her bathroom feels with the white tile in it. I was afraid the black wallpaper might darken the space a lot but it feels bright in there with subway tile!

  7. Knocked it out of the park! Love every single detail.

  9. Love how clean and chic this is, that bathroom wallpaper is so good!!!!

  10. My friend! What a perfect perfect space for a teen. So sophisticated and stylish yet playful. Congrats! She must be thrilled! Now you can enjoy it. xo

  11. Gail Dano says:

Love this Erin! Lizzie must be so proud of it and her amazing Mum!!
Where are the bed pillows from?
    The bath is so cool…….

    • Erin says:

Thanks Gail!! I’ve already told her that she’s gonna have to give up her room for when guests come, like Grannie Gail! The bed pillows are from an artist whose website is Hapi Art. She has really cool prints that I think you would love.

  12. Okay, I knew I would love the bathroom… but the bedroom turned out so well too 🙂 I’m pretty sure you could takeover this room, your daughter wouldn’t mind right ?!

  13. Traci Hutton says:

Omg, so good. Amazing actually…well done!!

  14. What a lucky little girl to get such a pretty room! I love the wallpaper and mix of textures/colours. And that bathroom…the wallpaper is HEAVEN and I love how it plays off the classic subway. Great work!!!!

  15. That subway tile looks soooo good! And I absolutely adore how well that green and purple pallete looks 🙂

    • Erin says:

Subway tile is always a winner in my book. And now I’m gonna add purple as a winner because I think I have a new found love affair with it!

  16. Erin, I can’t get over your daughter’s bedroom and bathroom! Absolutely beautiful my friend! That bathroom is so chic and dramatic with the wallpaper and gold fixtures in the shower! You daughter is lucky to have such a talented mother! Bravo on a job well done! XOXO, Sarah

  17. Meredith Shrimanker says:

Is there any contest? Hands down the best. Love, love, love everything about the bedroom and bathroom.

    • Erin says:

That’s funny. Conner asked me this morning if I won the challenge! No contest, or if there is everyone is a winner because everyone ends up with rooms that are 100x better than when they started. Win, win!

  18. What a lucky girl especially to have that swinging chair. I always wanted one of those as a kid. Congrats – looks fabulous!

  19. Nailed it!! Once again you’re a rock star! Looks incredible! Love it and I hope your daughter enjoys it!

    • Erin says:

Thank you Laurie! My daughter seems to be enjoying it and was pretty ecstatic about getting her shower back yesterday after being without it for over a month! No more sharing a bathroom with her brothers!

  20. Emy says:

Love this room so much! I think our daughters must be the same person (except mine is messier). She turned 9 and hates pink and loves purple now too (probably to spite me since I hate it.)
Her room is so cool and I hope it grows with her. Love those wallpapers so much.

    • Erin says:

Oh my daughter is pretty messy herself! I took most of the toys out of her room so I’m hoping she can be a bit cleaner now.

  21. This is what tween room dreams are made of! The bedroom is pretty and playful and the bathroom is off the charts. So sophisticated! Does she realize how awesome her mom is for giving a room this cool? Great job!

    • Erin says:

She may not fully realize it but I am sure to remind her each time I walk into her room and don’t want to leave!! She’s got some pressure on her to keep it clean and looking this way!

  22. Amanda Kuhn says:

Wow! What a transformation- definitely worth the wait. I know the wheels will be spinning in D’s mind once she sees this! Congrats

    • Erin says:

D was super cute the first time she saw it when it was almost done. She said “whoa- that is a change!”. You know who Liz wants to have over for first sleepover in the new room!

  23. Jana bek says:

Eek what fabulous transformations! So in love with your wallpaper choices and each space looks 10x bigger! Bravo lady, your daughter must be so delighted!

    • Erin says:

That may be the magic of my photographer making the spaces look bigger ;). But the bathroom definitely feels bigger now!

  24. Kara says:

Congrats! The spaces are beautiful! I love the rugs you used in your daughter’s bedroom & bath. Would you mind sharing the sources?

  25. Oh my goodness, it looks so amazing!!

  26. Susie says:

Oh my stars! Love that bedroom wallpaper! Also totally smitten with the bathroom. It is amazing that you did two rooms! Great job! Susie from The Chelsea Project

  27. Staci says:

Great job! What is the source for the hanging chair and ceiling fan? Any special tips you’d suggest for hanging the chair from the ceiling?

    • Erin says:

I will have a post early next week with all the sources for the room. But let me just tell you the ceiling fan is the best fan I have ever had. Seriously doesn’t make sound at all! For hanging the chair just get a really long screw and attach into a stud. so far, so good but we’ll see if it holds up to three rowdy kids.

  28. My daughter would die for that cactus wallpaper, so much fun and I’m with Cassie that bathroom would not be for the kids!

    • Erin says:

I’ve already told my daughter that her room may become the place we let guests use at our house. Or it may be the place her mom takes over one day while she is at school 🙂

  29. I love everything about these spaces. Great job on two beautiful makeovers!

  30. So gorgeous!! Every detail was planned perfectly. Gosh, that bathroom is amazing. Love the fixtures!

  31. Jess says:

WOW! Amazing! I can’t believe that you were able to tackle two spaces. It all looks so good. I’d move right in if I were you!

    • Erin says:

I owe a ton of it to my tile guy. He did so much for me. Every day when he came over I would add something new on his list of to-do’s. Which is probably why he was here for over three weeks!

  32. I don’t know which space I love more…I think the bathroom. No, the bedroom. No, the bathroom! They’re both amazing! I love the pillows on the bed. Am I the only one who thinks they’re a little yonic? Dirty mind, perhaps! They’re still fab though – extra girl power, haha. Seriously, though, you knocked it out of the park.

  33. beautiful!!! What a lucky girl!! I love both wallpaper choices and the lighting! That pop of purple on the bed is so pretty! And of course the hanging chair is the best. I foresee many hours of reading there! Bravo!

  34. Bre says:

I’m totally jealous too! That’s one lucky kiddo. That bathroom is totally amazing!

  35. Katie Cooley says:

Looks gorgeous! What kind of carpet is in your daughter’s bedroom? We are building a house and I want something like that! Can your provide the source?

    • Erin says:

      Hi Katie,
The carpet was in the house before we moved it so I don’t know the source. But I think it is a pretty common carpet. I’m not a huge fan of it because our dog’s nails catch on it and pull loops a lot.

  36. Kristen says:

Oh wow! This transformation is amazing! I am in love with all of that tile in the bathroom! I can see why you may be a bit jealous! Nicely done!

  37. Kim says:

This is probably the CUTEST teen space I’ve seen in a long time! It’s fun but still sophisticated. There is literally not one thing that I don’t like! Inspiration overload! Great, great job!

  38. Beautiful transformation! That wallpaper is amazing!

  39. ANIKO says:

Tha wallpaper is Amaze!! So good!

  40. Erin, this is fantastic! A dream from any girl. Love the color combo together, and I was not sure I would. You did an amazing job blending them together with all of the accents, etc. My daughter would live in the swing chair. Great job!

    • Erin says:

Thank you Linda! And thank you for inviting us this round. It was fun and such a great group to be included with!

  41. So great, such a beautiful transformation!

  42. What a fun space for a lucky girl!!
